Racist Road Sign Spotted In Ypsilanti
YPSILANTI, Mich. -- Police want to find out who tampered with a road commission sign in Ypsilanti.
The digital message sign, which is often used to advise motorists about construction or traffic alerts, was in place near barricades at the intersection of Ridge and Holmes Roads in Ypsilanti.
But on Friday morning, a motorist snapped a picture of the message flashing on he sign. It spelled out "God Hates" and was followed by the N-word.
The motorist sent that photo to state police, who went to the scene and took the sign down.
Justin Markley is a driver who was shocked by the message,
"That's insane. That's not something I've ever seen around here before," Markley said.
But Shawn Sanders said he didn't think the sign should have been taken down.
"It should have been left alone. The sign represented somebody's opinion or beliefs, and they just completely trashed them by the authorities coming by once again by making us do what they feel is right," Sanders said.
The sign was placed at the site by the Washtenaw County Road Commission. Messages for the sign can only be programmed through access to a locked box on the sign.
The Road Commission and the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department are investigating.
